Is Nairobi National Park worth visiting?

Why it is worth visiting

• One of the densest black rhino populations in Africa, with sightings common on a morning drive.
• Lion, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and hippo all resident within 20 minutes of the city.
• Over 500 bird species in a compact, easily covered area.
• You can land at the airport, drive, and be back for an afternoon meeting or an onward flight.
• The skyline-behind-wildlife photograph exists nowhere else on earth.

What it does not offer

• No elephants — the park is too small to hold them.
• Aircraft noise and a visible city skyline on the northern side.
• Busy weekends and school holidays, especially near the Main Gate.
• Nothing like the scale or the migration spectacle of the Mara.

Who it suits best

Travellers on a layover or a short Nairobi stay, families wanting a manageable first safari, birders, photographers after the skyline shot, and anyone who wants to see rhino without a long transfer.

Who might skip it

If you already have a week in the Mara, Amboseli or Laikipia and only one spare day in Nairobi, you may prefer to use that day for the Sheldrick elephant nursery and the Giraffe Centre instead. If you have two spare days, do both.
