Getting there
Nairobi National Park from Nairobi city centre
The Main Gate is only about 7 kilometres from the central business district — the shortest journey to a national park anywhere in the world.
Drive times
- Before 06:30: 20 minutes to the Main Gate
- Weekday morning rush: 40 minutes or more
- Midday: 25–30 minutes
- Evening rush from the park back into town: up to an hour
The route
From the CBD take Uhuru Highway south, join Langata Road past Wilson Airport, and the Main Gate is signposted on the left shortly after the Nairobi Safari Walk. The Southern Bypass is a useful alternative if you are coming from the west of the city.
How to travel
- Pre-booked private safari vehicle — collects you from your hotel and takes you straight into the park.
- Ride-hailing to the gate — cheap, but you still need a park-approved vehicle inside.
- Self-drive — allowed and popular; a saloon car copes in the dry season, a 4x4 is far better after rain.
- Matatus run along Langata Road but do not enter the park.
Timing your morning
Leave your hotel by 05:30 to be at the gate as it opens at 06:00. That first hour is the single biggest factor in what you see, and you will be back in the city for a late breakfast.
